I have two children approaching the teen age. When you consider all the negative and alarming news involving teens or youths nowadays, you cannot help but be very concerned as a mother. Once I picked up this book, and browsed through it, I instantly knew that it is worth reading. I noticed its distinct differences from others, which makes it unique and interesting.

Even though "The Big Payback" is generally intended for single African-American mothers, it is very relevant to other mothers, as well. It offers sound parenting advice which can be applied by all regardless of status and background. It has many special qualities like the way it is presented. Right after Mr. Tardy's introduction, you are presented with a touching account and revelation from his mother who opens her heart sincerely to readers. This really caught my attention and convinced me to read the rest of the book. Two especially enlightening chapters 1) why you should not give up on your child (son) and (2) you do not have the right to do so! These two chapters truly motivate both a parent and child to continue to improve their relationship and strive for a better future. Other chapters are filled with sound advice, great tips and guidance on just about every aspect related to raising a (teenage) child such as cultural influences, communicating with your child – the do’s and don’t`s, deciding your priorities between work and your child and even the more troubling issues such as drug abuse and suicide. In short, it has almost everything a parent needs to know and follow in the quest to raise a successful child and be a great parent.

Essentially what a son needs most from his mother is time and attention. All the material things are worthless without these two important things. A nurturing mother can ultimately shape a child into a successful person - spiritually and emotionally. After all, that should be the goal of every mother. Therefore, I totally recommend this book to all the mothers who care about their precious sons!
