The Bindings of Woe: Chain of Worlds by Connor Jackson follows the exploits of friends Carver and Helena, who witness a terrorist attack during a visit to Caswen. Carver flees the Inner Market, losing an identification pin. The pin is shown to Magistrate Julius, who dispatches soldiers to attack their home village of Verrel. A pitiful handful of survivors including Carver and Helena, Rook, Nina, and Sebastian struggle through Vellum forest to seek refuge with Duncan in the town of Leydes. On route, they are badly mauled by Vells. Carver vows vengeance on the soldiers and abandons the group, nearly getting himself killed during a series of individual escapades. He somehow gets mixed up with the Lost Seekers who tax him with a horrifying task.
The Bindings of Woe by Connor Jackson was a heroic adventure with a complexity of world-building and characterization that made it a satisfying read. I enjoyed learning the global history and inter-racial politics that stretched beyond the island on which the action took place. My curiosity was piqued by glimpses of the alien or even possibly mechanical creatures with bone feet referred to as Sovereigns. I liked the fact that although these beings were oppressors, at least one specimen seemed to have some decency. The narrative was full of action, battles, pursuits, escapes, and a range of exciting forms of drama. A building sense of injustice was an effective motivator that kept me reading, eager to find out whether the wheel of justice would turn later in the series. This book will please fantasy fans!
