Marie Jeanette Delaney leaves her life on a Derbyshire farm and follows François Deschamps to Paris, where he becomes her husband. But life in Paris is worse than anything she could have imagined, and when her controlling husband starts abusing her, she finds comfort in the company of her children. The sudden death of her husband gives Marie the opportunity for a new life. She moves to the Loire Valley, where she meets Arnaud and falls in love again. But trials threaten their romance, and each of them has emotional baggage from the past that is hard to avoid. The Biscuit Tin by Loriana Paterson is the story of one woman who experiences abuse and fights to redefine her identity and reclaim her voice. Can she eventually achieve independence?
The Biscuit Tin by Loriana Paterson was a delight to read, an engaging story of love, abuse, and liberation with characters that are complex and relatable. The first-person narrative voice delivers the emotional currents of the story with unwonted clarity. The author excels at depicting Marie’s pain alongside compelling imagery. You find her holding back tears while clutching her baby. You see her rushing to her mother for emotional support, only to be told to be strong for the children. The author delivers the painful and psychologically disturbing experiences that Marie goes through, but also provides excitement, like when she briefly escapes to be in the arms of Arnaud. I enjoyed the lively narrative voice, the character development, and the author’s exploration of what it takes to heal from trauma and rediscover one’s voice.
