Helena Blavatsky (1831 - 1891) was a Russian mystic, spiritualist, and philosopher who based her writings on the teachings of Tibetan sages. Although guided by eastern practices, she struck a harmonious balance between east and west that remains relevant to this day. Her better-known publications include “Isis Unveiled” (1877) and “The Secret Doctrine” (1888). She was influential in the founding of the Theosophical Society in 1875. The Book of the Golden Precepts brings her work to life for a new audience, with related commentary from a number of contemporary spiritual authorities to make it more accessible. There are four extracts from the book, which bring insights and answers to questions. The book covers The Golden Rule (which is recognized by all faiths), reincarnation, karma (cause and effect), and the Masters such as Maitreya, Sanat Kumara, and Melchizedek. Sacred artifacts, secret brotherhoods, numerology, embedded codes, symbols, supernatural powers, ancient languages, and Atlantis all feature, as well as sacred texts that have been preserved. Like all pioneers, Blavatsky attracted criticism, accusations, and hostility in a world dominated by the churches, not ready to absorb alternative spiritual thinking, which they regarded as Eastern.
The Book of the Golden Precepts by H. P. Blavatsky provides a selection of Blavatsky’s original material, amplified by extensive notes from a panel of authorities that place her work in a contemporary context. Helena Blavatsky’s contribution to occult literature is enormous, and her work was among the first to be available to the general public, as much of the information had previously been the preserve of secret societies. Blavatsky was also pivotal in promoting the role of women in spirituality. The extensive glossary deserves particular recognition. It covers a multitude of spiritual terms from many belief systems, as well as details of influential individuals, organizations, and the Masters. I was particularly drawn to the sections relating to Melchizedek and Mary Magdalene, as little has been published regarding the former, while the latter has been both neglected and misrepresented. Predictions regarding the end times are also thought-provoking. This work brings with it a welcome return to ancient esoteric knowledge at a time increasingly influenced by New Age gurus and AI-generated messages of dubious origin. This book will provide both guidance and inspiration to those following a spiritual path.
