Lyra Grey’s The Book Witch is an exciting urban fantasy, the first book in The Evelyn Wight Archives series. The story follows Evelyn Wight, a thief-for-hire, who steals a book filled with dark magic. She must get it out of town as quickly as possible before she is noticed, and the book mustn't fall into the wrong hands. But a powerful coven notices her, and that is the beginning of trouble for her. She is accompanied by Valen, the head of the Security Team for her boss. Her journey plunges her into the shadowy depths of the Dark City—a vast underground realm divided into unpredictable zones. Danger lurks everywhere in this place where each faction lives by unique rules. She gets help from Kirat, who seems to know how the Dark City functions, but can she survive long enough to get out of there with the book?

The Book Witch is one of the best books I have read in the urban fantasy genre. I found the dark allure of City of Bones by Cassandra Clare, the stellar worldbuilding akin to The Witching Hour by Anne Rice, and the mysterious world of The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón. I gladly put this book on the shelf alongside my best fantasy reads. The characters are intriguing and realistic. Each character is distinctly developed, and each possesses unique quirks. Evelyn Wight is fierce, resourceful, and haunted by past losses and secrets she keeps. The power of the book leaves an indelible mark on her. Valen, her loyal protector, is physically strong, and the author uses him to create suspense, making readers doubt his real motives. I loved the depiction of the Second Mother — a primordial, nearly immortal figure, who exemplifies the dark, ancient magic that Evelyn fears but also seeks to understand. I have just become a new fan of Lyra Grey, fascinated by her writing, which offers impeccably written dialogue and memorable characters.
