The Bus Driver's Mother by Beverly Pridgen is the touching story of a mother's relationship with a special needs child. After getting pregnant during her second year in college, Ella starts a family with her college sweetheart, giving birth to six children over the years. However, her marriage falls apart, and she finds herself having to raise the children on her own, including one with special needs named Andrew. Unemployed with a dormant heart condition, Ella is forced to seek help from friends and family to make it past this phase of her life. As she finds her feet, she meets Sam, her second husband. Meanwhile, Andrew grows up to be a bus driver with a big heart. But his relationships with women continue to cause trouble for Ella and Sam.
A moving story about motherhood and love, The Bus Driver's Mother is filled with heartbreaks, laughs, and warmth. The narrative is split into two POVs featuring Ella and Andrew, often switching timelines back and forth. Author Beverly Pridgen tells a truly heartfelt tale of a mother trying to raise six children on her own and her relationship with her child with special needs. The characters feel genuine and authentic, with layers of depth to their personalities. Ella's wide range of emotions and thought processes provide a fascinating juxtaposition to Andrew's straightforward attitude of living life by the moment. I found it absolutely captivating to read. The Bus Driver's Mother is an absorbing novel that I would recommend to anyone who enjoys underdog stories.
