Jiggles is a very unusual little pig. This is quite a concern for his parents. While Mom, Dad and Jiggles' siblings all frolic in the mud to stay cool, Jiggles wants to run to the river to get clean. He refuses to play with everyone else in the mud. He just doesn't like the idea of getting dirty. In fact, "The idea of feeling the dirty, gooey mud on his feet made him sick." To him, mud is dirt, full of germs and who knows what else. Jiggles is obsessed with cleanliness to the point of having a condition known as mysophobia - an obsessive fear of germs.

Jiggles' parents are beside themselves with worry. The mud is supposed to help keep a pig's skin moist. All pigs play in the mud, not just for fun, but to protect their skin from drying out. They finally come up with a solution and Jiggles gives it a try, playing in the mud, after all, and then quickly running to the river afterwards to wash it all off.

In The Clean Little Pig, A.M. Vela and Mary Esparza-Vela have created another charming picture story book that is also educational. The young reader learns about cleanliness, pigs and mysophobia, all in one short little tale. Readers also learn about differences. Jiggles is different from the rest of the pigs, but his family accepts him anyway and helps him adapt to the world of pigs - not necessarily to fit in, but to protect his skin. This is a cute little story about cleanliness and the importance of accepting others for their differences. The story is also bilingual: English and Spanish. Well done!
