The Conditions of Love by author Dale M. Kushner is captivating from the start. Eunice has a tough life. Her mother is borderline nuts, a movie star addict, and a manicurist. Things finally start to settle down and have some semblance of normalcy when Sam, her mother's newest boyfriend, moves in. He is the father figure she has missed her whole life since her own dad abandoned her as an infant. Sam was her rock. He, her pet turtle, and the sweet elderly man downstairs are her only friends. Of course, forever is not to be had as is typical with her mother and they part ways with Sam, moving to a small town. When a flood wipes out the town, she is rescued by a earthly woman who cares for her and treats her as her own. Again, forever is not in the cards. She is shuffled into the foster system, but not for long. Her one true love comes into her life and that is where the story gets very interesting.
I love this book. It is one of those 'pull you in and won't let go' type of reads that has you feeling like you are walking with friends. You will find yourself sad, overjoyed, overwhelmed, irate, and devastated within these pages. Author Dale M. Kushner is a very talented writer whose book is solid proof. I would recommend the audio book to any road tripper and the paperback or hard bound to anyone else. And give yourself time to enjoy it because you are not going to be able to stop until the epilogue is complete!!
