The Couple’s Counsel is a book by Ikenna Ngene, Ph.D., and Ijeoma Ngene. After years of marriage, Pete and Jane have trouble in their relationship. On the advice of Jane’s mother, the couple attends a couple’s retreat. They meet three couples, one of whom is the host couple, Tom and Liz, and spend time connecting separately and as a group. The duration of the marriages varies between the couples, and they all seem to have different problems. During their group time and counseling sessions, the couples learn about common arguments in relationships and how to cope with or overcome the obstacles. While alone, the couples attempt to reconnect.

Ikenna Ngene, Ph.D., and Ijeoma Ngene have written a fantastic book from multiple perspectives. The story is entertaining and sends clear messages even if we don’t know we’re receiving them. The discussions touch on delicate subjects, like the role of each partner, spiritual and physical intimacy, expectations, and balancing children, work, marriage, and other demands. In addition, we are privy to private conversations between couples to see the reactions of people who have been married for some time or only briefly. Tom is a pastor, and scriptures are noted, but the counseling sessions attempt to embrace everyone, no matter their religious preferences. The Couple’s Counsel is an excellent selection for married couples or single people as it shows what you can expect from marriage and ways to learn from your mistakes so you don’t repeat them or carry resentment.
