John Turbo’s truck driving career turns haywire when he meets Stan Evans, an ex-Navy Seal. Required to ride shotgun with a senior driver on his first day, 30-year-old John finds out that he’s driving with the leader of the underground rebel group Good Old Democracy, better known as GOD, a group that opposes the government in every way. With aliens and government conspiracies as its premise, The Crack of Dawn by Gerard Labrecque is a fast-paced novella that will delight sci-fi fans.

Through an alien named Dawn, a Cultivator of the human race, John discovers that humans were bred on Earth as a slaves and food supply in the intergalactic market. However, the Harvesters started mating with them and produced a new race of thinking but unpredictable, war-prone humans. The Cultivators returned with a mission to make the humans a peaceful race before the Harvesters’ arrival. If not, the harvest would fail, forcing the Exterminators to come to Earth. Unfortunately, General Davies captured them and built his own world domination scheme.

Labrecque introduces interesting characters; Turbo’s zero to hero transformation is excellently done. Director/General Davis and his determination to have a winning war against the alien Harvesters makes him a fascinating antagonist. On the other hand, the development of the story can be more polished. However, this is merely a small dent as Labrecque’s action-packed and unpredictable plot makes the read enjoyable. On the whole, sci-fi fans will enjoy The Crack of Dawn and I look forward to Gerard Labrecque’s next work.
