The Crashers by Magen Cubed is part thriller, part mystery, and part superhero. Only five people survive a train crash. Kyle Joeng, an ex-detective and felon, wakes up without a scratch to show for the accident. Veteran Adam Harlow suddenly finds he has superhuman strength. Bridger Levi’s life was over, or so he thought. Dying from cancer stopped his world, but a new psychic ability and a connection with Adam give him a second chance. Clara Reyes is a straight A student with eyes on a bigger and brighter future, but a newfound ability for speed changes her plans. Single mom Norah Aroyan just wants to pay the bills and take care of her daughter. She doesn’t know to fit in being able to move objects with her mind. The train explosion changed their lives, but they find a new path and connection with each other.
Ordinary people with extraordinary powers. Despite the superhero powers, The Crashers is grounded in reality. The powers come second. The characters come first. It’s completely character orientated. Magen Cubed creates characters that are easy to connect to because they’re so real. They’re five flawed individuals who are just taking it a day at a time, but these ordinary people, the kind you’d pass on the street, are so much more than mundane. I found it hard to figure who I liked more. Norah and her daughter Hannah have a wonderful relationship. There’s so much love, and Hannah is so sweet and full of wonder. Adam and Bridger’s relationship evolves through the novel, finding a connection through death. Kyle is a mix. He’s definitely the character with an attitude that people hate, but you have to love him. Clara is innocent in a lot of ways, but her heart is so big.
The Crashers isn’t a stereotypical thriller or superhero tale. It’s an original story for ordinary people to become heroes. The Crashers is tragic, funny, full of heart, a little romantic, and a lot of what it means to be human. Cubed tackles heavy subjects: violence, bombings, suicide, PTSD, and others. Yet it never felt hard to read. The humor and the characters made it easy to read and connect with. A definite must-read!
