The Death Keeper Chronicles: A Light in the Darkness by Daniel Hersch is a fun, thought-provoking, thrilling read. This story has several beginnings, according to its narrator. The first beginning provides a brief introduction to vampires before we are introduced to Yiyao of Huaxia. About three thousand years ago, she lived a very happy, rural life with her husband, Min. However, one night, Min suddenly attacked her, turning her into a vampire. Consequently, her family disowned her, and she had to leave the village. Ever since, she has had to wander the earth, gaining and losing close relationships along the way. The second beginning focuses on Alexander, a psychic in modern times. Alexander had chosen to live a normal life, not relying on his psychic powers. However, an incident involving Yiyao forces him to use his abilities. Yiyao and Alexander’s story is intriguing from beginning to end.
I greatly enjoyed reading The Death Keeper Chronicles. Daniel Hersch does an amazing job of world-building. The vampires and psychics are just a few of the creatures that roam this world unnoticed by the general masses. I also love how Yiyao’s encounter with Jesus of Nazareth shapes her character. On the other hand, I found it interesting that while Alexander was raised in a seemingly Christian family, he chose to live estranged from them. I like that most characters were given intriguing background stories. My favorite character was the narrator, who is excellent at setting the pace and developing suspense. These attributes shine through in all the thrilling action scenes. I am also glad how insightful Hersch’s coverage of death and forgiveness comes across. I highly recommend this novel to everyone.
