Amazing amounts of research and business lessons are included in Sally Percy’s The Disruptors: How 15 Successful Businesses Defied the Norm. The businesses are disruptors in a wide variety of industries, including Airbnb, Crocs, Hello Fresh, Tesla, TikTok, OnlyFans, OpenAI, and Spotify. Each chapter includes how the company was founded, history of its growth, strategies utilized, and how it stood up against competition; secrets of success and challenges; and how the company defied the norm to achieve success, provided in bullet points. The author concisely describes entire industries and how each company was able to succeed against competition and existing technology.

The development of video games and other products, such as Nintendo, was well described, with the challenges of competing against other companies such as Sony. The OpenAI chapter provided a concise development of the Artificial Intelligence field, internal political and ethical concerns of the company, and its reliance on partnerships with companies such as Microsoft. Differences in the approaches of Ethereum and Bitcoin, as well as the development of blockchain and cryptocurrency technologies and use, were well described and documented. These are only some examples of how the author provides valuable information on these companies and the strategies used for success. The lessons in Sally Percy’s The Disruptors are strong and will improve readers’ business models and businesses. The information offers the reader a great deal of insight into other industries as well. For anyone interested in learning about disruptive companies and how innovative ideas can disrupt entire industries, this book comes highly recommended.
