The Doomsong Voyage by J. G. Harlond is aimed at young adult readers of fantasy, coming-of-age, and adventure fiction. Finn of the Volsungs is a young tale-maker in the Cold North. He stays with his cousins, who unwillingly share their roof with Finn, considering him an idler. Everything changes when a mysterious stranger called Master Odo gives Finn an old sword and sends him on a mission. Finn must find Goran Ice-Heart, a pirate in the Middle Sea, and convince him to return to the North, for he is the righteous owner of the Doomsong Sword and the Volsungs' leader. Otherwise, his people may perish because of a calamity. Finn reluctantly embarks on a merchant ship heading to the South with an unusual crew on board. Who is Katranina, a girl resembling a cat? Will Finn return with Goran and save his people?

Readers who love Norse mythology will appreciate J. G. Harlond's The Doomsong Voyage. The author knows these myths profoundly and shares their ancient wisdom while developing a compelling narrative and enigmatic characters such as Katranina or a ship-mother, Norna Silveryarn. The narrative has a well-researched historical background. The combination of myths and history results in a story full of incredible adventures and meaningful life lessons. Harlond examines the themes of responsibility and duty and how they affect our inner growth. Interestingly, the main character is not an archetypal hero. Finn is a tale-maker, and it's up to him whether he continues to observe the dramatic events around him or becomes an active participant. Young adult fantasy fans will find a source of encouragement in this novel, and seasoned readers will discover a gifted author with a unique approach to this genre.
