Kevin Alexander idolizes his big brother, James. James is tall and athletic, and he is on the Varsity basketball team. Kevin is on the short side, and doesn’t make the team. And there is more. The girl Kevin likes only has eyes for James. James also has a secret which Kevin only discovers after his brother goes into a coma. Through the mysterious Crane, and equally ambivalent Charlie and Sam, Kevin follows James into the alternative reality of Genetrix after being drugged with Somnium. This is what poisoned James. Since he is there in a dream, Kevin has the sort of powers you only get in dreams and so he appears to be a wizard. But he is up against a very powerful force in the God of Genetrix in his battle to save his brother.

This is a well-written and extremely enjoyable book. All the characters, even the minor ones, are interesting and distinctive. The author portrays both reality and fantasy authoritatively. Kevin’s world of family life, school life, fancying girls and facing disappointment is presented in detail. We share his emotions along the way. Genetrix is also fascinatingly presented with its ogres, witches and other magical beings. The fight of good versus evil sweeps us along to an exciting conclusion. We see Kevin grow and develop in both worlds. "The Dreamer" is a very impressive debut novel which the author apparently “dreamed up” while daydreaming on his tractor!
