The Dreaming Grove (A Shimmer Novel Book 1) by Levi Melton is a young adult fantasy that explores the darkness of dreams. Meri and Alice are best friends that share a secret. They can share dreams with one another, so even when they move thousands of miles away, they are still connected to one another. On top of sharing dreams, they can create anything they want within their dreams. They can also glance into other people's dreams. One day, a large black bird shows up and their dreams take a dark and unnerving turn. The girls must discover who or what is in their dreams with them. What do they want? And what will Meri and Alice do about it?
This is a very refreshing young adult fantasy story. Readers will enjoy the uniqueness of this story and the way it sets itself apart from other stories in this genre. While there is chemistry between characters Meri and Callum, their romance is not the main focus of the story. Meri and Alice are well conceived, fleshed out characters with depth and integrity, unlike many cookie cutter characters readers might be used to in this genre. The writing itself was very beautiful and descriptive. Readers will get lost in the scenery of the story, smelling the food that is cooking, feeling the grass beneath their feet, feeling how cold the characters are or the warmth they share. Very nicely done!
