J. Christie's The Everling and the Child of Sacrifice follows Chezzy Nithercot and his friends at Balefire Academy after a violent attack that leaves the school shaken and under heavy watch. Students try to return to normal life, with classes, competitions, and fun school events, but tension lies beneath the surface of everything. While Veronica spends her time trying to recover and make sense of who she is after everything that happened, Chezzy has to accept being the last everling and all the attention that comes with it. When someone is taken during a school dance, the danger becomes real again, and the students begin to understand that the adults around them may not always be able to save them when things go wrong. Chezzy is forced to act when the safety of his friends is on the line. Through it all, how far is he willing to go to keep the people he cares about safe?
The Everling and the Child of Sacrifice by J. Christie is a YA fantasy that mixes school life with darker ideas about power, survival, and growing up in a place where students aren’t always safe. The book shifts between daily school scenes and risky situations, keeping things lively while still staying close to the characters. The pace changes a lot, slowing down for Veronica’s recovery and blossoming friendships, then picking up when secrets and danger come to the surface. The main teen characters all have their own unique backstories, which guide the way they treat each other. The story looks at themes like identity and trust, especially when friendships clash, and secrets come to the surface. If you like YA school stories with some mystery, a touch of sci-fi, and friendships, you’ll enjoy this book.
