The Fish Who Changed the Game by Barbara Pinke is a charming and uplifting children’s story set in a vividly imagined underwater world. It follows Seassy, a young seahorse who wants to participate in the Great Ocean Games. She even dreams of winning. She should be playing in shipwrecks among coral reefs like her little friends, but she is much more ambitious and intends to do things that go beyond her community’s expectations. Thus, Seassy intends to compete in an event that no female fish has ever entered. Seassy trains extensively, helped by her Uncle Whinny, a former racer, and her lovely friend, Puffy. Her training is hard, and includes a complex coral maze, braving the darkness of a deep cave, and mastering a race across the ocean currents, but she keeps training even when attacked by skepticism and hostility from her competitors.

The Fish Who Changed the Game by Barbara Pinke is a wonderful children’s book that all little girls should read! Why should we be excluded from events that we dream about based on our gender? As a teacher, I applaud the way this book combines storytelling with ethical and social messages that everyone should listen to. This is an initiatory story in which the main character grows and shows what she is capable of achieving. It is so engaging and motivating for all youngsters, not only young girls. We can do whatever we put our minds to if we work hard and do not abandon our projects when things turn difficult. Thank you for sharing such a fabulous and beautifully illustrated story. The colors and the warmth of the drawings by Alvin Adhi are enchanting!
