The Flashfall Sword is the second book in The Book of Ruin series by W. G. Hladky. A prequel set about 100 years before the first book in the series, the story follows Ranger Lovecraft Weir as he tries his best to stay safe and keep his loved ones safe too. The Shadowlanders are unrelentingly vicious oppressors, and they stop at nothing until they get what they want. Lovecraft knows no one is exempt from their aggression, and it is up to him and his fellow Rangers to keep their little tribes and communities safe from the chaos of the Shadowlanders and their thirst for blood. NATO tries to do its best to secure its residents and provide them with a life worth living. But what can they do when the attacks come from everywhere? Can they still keep everyone safe?

The Flashfall Sword is not for readers who have a weak stomach because sometimes the dialogues and descriptions can become a little too vivid. That said, W. G. Hladky creates an immersive background for the story, gives our protagonist a goal to follow, and just the right amount of grit to face horrible scenes. I am even more impressed with the depiction of the Shadowlanders and their much-despised alpha. The author holds nothing back and lets the story become as gory as it can be in the beginning to let readers know how despicable Shadowlanders can be. Lovecraft proves to be the kind of hero that grows and develops at his own pace. The author provides him with plenty of opportunities to do this, and I appreciated it. This is a must-read novel for dystopian fiction enthusiasts.
