If you want to inspire children to appreciate what trees and forests do in our world, The ForestGirls with their Friends and Teachers written by Sissel Waage and illustrated by Ana-Maria Cosma is for you. The story begins at the edge of a forest where the sounds of leaves, bees, and birds invite play and friendship with a tree. Going deeper into the forest we meet the ForestWomen who care for the forest. We learn about trees from around the world, the animals who live with them, how forests keep our world clean and safe, and how we can help to protect them. Although targeted at girls, the poetic yet informative text and the beautiful watercolor illustrations are sure to engage any young reader.

In The ForestGirls with their Friends and Teachers, Sissel Waage and Ana-Maria Cosma give us a wonderful presentation about the importance of trees and forests to our natural environment. While some children live close to a forest, many in urban areas have little or no exposure to them beyond the limits of a small city park or the trees in their yard. Through text and art, Waage and Cosma skillfully convey an appreciation for the complexity, connectedness, and benefits of trees and forests in our lives and foster an attitude of caring for them. Having explored several forests in Europe and North America, I really enjoyed the feeling the story gave me as it brought back those memories with every page turned. This is a highly recommended read.
