E.E. Hornburg’s The Forest’s Keeper features Rose’s journey of self-discovery. Rose was born with a disfigured leg but had grown up to be a formidable fighter. Her sister, Eira, frustrates Rose because she has to deal with her sister’s actions while searching for the sorceress, Amelia. While visiting Eira, Rose trains with Cal for a tournament. She keeps seeing yellow eyes that resemble the goddess of death’s servant’s eyes. After the tournament, Rose tells Cal about seeing the yellow eyes. Rafe appears and tells Rose and Cal that Eral Forest is drowning in poisoned water. Rose’s grandmother, Renata, is the minister of Eral and needs their help. Meanwhile, Amelia is hiding in a swamp with a baby, her mother, and a nursemaid. She is called by Dusan, and they plan to kill the royal family, with Renata as the first target.
E.E. Hornburg focused on Rose and Amelia’s perspectives. Rose’s need to prove herself is evident when she refuses to let anyone help her. She also has to fight the inner turmoil she has with her feelings for Cal and her duty. Amelia became a topic of controversy between the sisters. Eira didn’t want her killed, while Rose wanted to avenge the deaths Amelia caused. Amelia appears very resourceful with every plan and backup plan she creates. The plot becomes extremely unpredictable with Rafe. He helps Rose and Cal, but he also brings chaos into the mix with his sudden disappearances. Rose's future hangs in the balance as she grapples with a series of decisions, intensifying the suspense. The vivid details of the forest of Eral enchanted me. It was easy to follow the alternating views of Rose and Amelia. The Forest’s Keeper will appeal to fantasy romance readers who enjoy magical adventures.
