Justin is a young sales rep living in New York City and desperately missing his family back home. On a long weekend, one of his colleagues, Trevor, sensing his loneliness, invites Justin to join him at a cabin in the Catskills. Justin has had a crush on Trevor since he joined the firm and agrees, even though he’s unsure of Trevor’s intentions. After an uncomfortably silent car ride to the cabin, Justin begins to think he’s made a terrible mistake. Over the period of three days, Justin is challenged and surprised by his coworker. Is Trevor gay, and is he interested in Justin as more than a travel companion for the weekend? Read Luis Ammerman’s The Getaway to find out.
I’ve been a fan of Luis Ammerman for some time now, and this novella didn’t let me down at all. The Getaway is a story of two men who need to find the confidence to make the first move. Does one of them finally man up? No spoilers from me, you’ll need to read the book to find out. What I most appreciated about this short story is that it focuses on the two men and their present situation. There’s no stereotypical coming out, homophobic family members, or teenage angst tropes. It’s an adult narrative with modern-day themes. I was captivated by the story and read it from beginning to end in one sitting. Some scenes in the book are best suited for mature readers only. I highly recommend this novella.
