In The Glass Marble, by Ozzie Logozzo, haunted by ghosts from her past, Police Detective Francesca Bruno must reconcile with tragedy and the knowledge that she is part of a system that failed. Life quickly spins out of control for Detective Bruno when New York City, already poised for a volatile showdown between what is and what was, explodes into a frenzy after a murder is committed and a vigilante surfaces. Leaving his signature calling card, a perfectly round glass marble at every scene, the vigilante’s actions quickly spur on a war in an already broken and divided city. It’s Detective Bruno’s job to pick up the pieces before she is next. Will she find the murderer before it is too late? Or will she be too distracted with the past to see what is right before her eyes?
Not for the faint of heart, The Glass Marble by Ozzie Logozzo reads like a noir thriller; short, to the point, with a rapidly building plot. It was a delight to get to know the characters, and I appreciated how the author introduced Francesca’s backstory. I enjoyed the noir tone. A breath of fresh air, the novel touches on quietly skirted political subjects that few people dare to discuss. The Glass Marble is a novel that has a quiet warning woven into the story. If we don’t take a stand and just hope for a savior, it can quickly become our undoing, and we could be next.
