The Glesga Skanks by Caroline Donnelly is a gritty, urban fantasy set in the tough streets of Glasgow, where the city’s underworld is ruled by fear and violence. The story centers around Pa Docherty, a notorious Glasgow kingpin, and the explosive conflict that arises when a new hustler named Brooks challenges his control. Caught in the middle is Pa Docherty’s grandson, Doughball, an often underestimated young man who finds himself ensnared in the deadly rivalry with horrifying consequences. As Doughball navigates his dangerous ties to both his powerful grandfather and the ambitious Brooks, the novel delves into the dark and unforgiving world of crime, loyalty, and survival in the streets of Glasgow.

Readers will be captivated by The Glesga Skanks for its raw and authentic portrayal of life in the underbelly of Glasgow. Caroline Donnelly excels in creating vivid, multi-dimensional characters who are both flawed and deeply human. Doughball, in particular, emerges as a complex protagonist, struggling between family loyalty and his own survival instincts. The plot is intense and fast-paced, driven by sharp dialogue and escalating tensions that keep readers on the edge of their seats. Additionally, the inclusion of an index of Glasgow’s colloquial language is a thoughtful touch, helping readers unfamiliar with the regional dialect to fully immerse themselves in the story. Donnelly’s keen understanding of character dynamics and the gritty realism of her setting make this novel a compelling read for those who appreciate stories about power struggles, family ties, and the harsh realities of life on the streets. The Glesga Skanks is a gripping tale of crime and consequence, where every decision has the potential to be deadly.
