The Gold by Krista Wagner is a fantasy storybook for children revolving around Amanda, a fifth grade student. Amanda is a lonely child. She lost her mother when she was young and she lives with her father and sister. Her father is away at work many a time and her sister is always pre-occupied with her own life. She was always teased by friends in school and and she was lonely and disappointed. Lost in life, Amanda starts hearing voices and she meets the talking pebble in the forest. Readers get to see the story taking a different turn from there where some good messages are conveyed to them.
The story is magical and at the same time realistic, and young readers will be able to connect well with the character of Amanda, her loss, pain, and disappointment. The book not only handles the topic of bullying, but also gives hope to all those youngsters experiencing loneliness and hurt. It also tells parents to be more aware of what their kids are going through. The author blends whimsy and reality effortlessly through the plot, and readers will want to meet Amanda. The descriptive and detailed narration makes the scenes vivid and the characters come alive. The author’s writing style is simple and elegant and the fluidity in expression gives a good pace and movement to the story. Readers will not find a boring moment in the story as they are taken along with Amanda on her magical yet realistic journey.
