“The social order of the State of Earth is Humane Capitalism. The fundamental value of Humane Capitalism is consumption, because one person’s spending provides work and income for another person. This is why consumption is the constitutional obligation of each and every citizen of the State of Earth.” The Grasshopper by Sasha J.M. introduces a world where Consumerism is the law. A hired killer known as The Grasshopper assassinated President Xing and his family under the order of Vice President Erivan. With Erivan as the new president, he can launch the war against the Non-Consumers, especially against Pascal Alexander, who succeeded in creating a strong Non-Consumer movement. Pascal wants the citizens to have the freedom to buy or not to buy.

In Pascal’s own words, “We will spend as much as we want and when we want. We will purchase goods and services that we want. From companies that are capable of offering, through fair competition in a free market, a product that we need, one that we like, one that we want.” I am intrigued and fascinated with the plot of the story, and more so with the concept of Consumerism – its upside and downside. The length of each chapter is short, only consuming two to five pages for the book’s Epub format. This directly makes for a fast-paced read. The story line also has good, unpredictable twists. All the characters have substantial depth to their persona – good and evil are not completely black and white in this story. On the whole, this is a great read.
