The Griffin Cryer: Griffin Riders by Julia Hughes opens in another world where a griffin rider instructor is waiting for the return of a young boy and his griffin. When the boy does not return, the prologue closes and we are introduced to 15-year-old Francesca (Frankie) Shaunessy who is a very real teenager on Earth. Slowly, it is revealed that Frankie’s brother is in a coma and the boy’s dog, Bally, is a link to the boy for the entire family. As Frankie and Bally are returning home in the early evening, the dog sprints off and Frankie whistles and calls him to return to her side. What Frankie does not know is that she has whistled and called a griffin (part eagle, part lion) and his rider from a parallel world, Ella-Earth. She meets the arrogant young rider and his glorious griffin and a truly wonderful adventure begins as this unlikely trio work to recover the Ella Stone. This magical stone is the only thing that is keeping the two worlds from colliding.
The Griffin Cryer is a compelling book that seamlessly mixes the fantasy world of Ella-Earth with the very real world of a 15-year-old British girl who is trying very hard to be a cool kid at school. The story has well-developed main characters and a supporting cast that is believable. The people and problems that Frankie encounters include those encountered by every teenager – peer pressure and the need to ‘fit in,’ parents who do not always understand what a teenager is experiencing, teachers who cause students to be ridiculed, and friends and acquaintances that sometimes surprise Frankie. Of course, Frankie encounters plenty that most teenagers can only imagine – but that is the fun in this book! Hughes mixes the real and fantasy worlds in a compelling way that made this book one that I wanted to go on and on. This is a very good read that is appropriate for any teenager – and teenagers will easily identify with Frankie. Highly recommended!
