The Fane Queen is the eleventh book in the Guardians of the Glede Series and the continuation of the River of Evil (book 10.) In The River of Evil, Tavin, Brann and Tia were misused, abused and violated at the hands of the Rendar in Kartonn. Tavin was raped by the Rendar branding him a Jodau. Kitiara, aka Tia or Kit, after being raped turned to selling her body to the Rendar in an attempt to protect those for whom she cared. Brann discovers he is in love with Tia but her past angers and devastates him. In the Fane Queen the trio comes to terms with their memories.
Tia’s anguish is so strong she makes plans to escape to Karsaba where there are memory ponds that can make one forget everything. When the boys discover she is missing, they rush to stop her. They encounter drunks that attempt to attack them sexually. One manages to cut Brann’s hair before the two heroes escape into Gavine’s Shop where they find Tia. Just as the men rush in the trio escape by combining their magic into a travel spell. The three end up in Karsaba not knowing the danger that lay ahead. War is raging in Karsaba as the trolls fight for access to the Kedar River.
Meanwhile, Xyza has possession of the Fire Stone one of the Fane Altar Stones. The stone brings unnatural behavior, repels magic used against it and sickens those who touch it. No one realizes Xyza has magical powers such as healing. When the stone is snatched away from Tia and thrown into a fire, the fane circling her head fades and falls; the young girl is very ill and must be transported to Rune Mountain if she is to survive.
The Fane Queen is a very involved book. I wish I had read the previous books. While this book can stand alone it did take me a while to figure out who, what, when, and where. The plot has great depth. While this is an action-packed fantasy, it is also the story of coming to terms with the past, with gender, and with maturing. The characters play well off of each other. I savored the definition of a soul mate. This is an excellent read; one that fantasy fans will appreciate.
