"The Healing Powers of Coffee" by Cal Orey is just another example of her ability to integrate excellent research with wonderful personal stories and good science. The research on the healing properties themselves is something that will capture the interest of most people who tend toward organic or natural foods and homeopathic healing. I liked the explanation of the process of "seed to cup" as well as the information about the various coffee blends. The section about the historical significance and evolution of coffee ignited my interest in how we have become such a coffee-loving nation. Even the brief section about the types of milks used in various coffees gave wonderful food for thought as most people rarely give consideration to that simple pleasure while pouring milks and sugars into their cup of Joe.

I loved hearing about the personal experiences of the author as a child. They brought back memories of my own and are sure to trigger images for most readers. The knowledge contained in the book reflects superb research which lends itself to the transition to practical knowledge. Perhaps my favorite parts of the book were the marvelous recipes which undoubtedly enhance the quality of a cup of coffee. From specialty coffees to side dishes to full-fledged meals, Orey gives the reader one gustatory treat after another. If you want to know the secrets to a good cup of coffee, a latte, or an expresso, this is the book for you!
