The Holiday Visitor by Trista Shaye is the second book in the Big the Barn Cat series. All is well at the W's farm and everyone has the Christmas spirit. Big remains devoted to his duties, even more now that the weather has gotten cold, and the children need to be watched over when they play in the snow. Not to mention, Big continues to be the best cat mentor he can be to Shiziks. Then the most shocking thing happens! Mr. W tosses something out into the snow and Big goes to investigate, only to discover a bat! To make things more complicated, this stranger isn't just a bat, but he's also a fugitive and offers Big a deal. As thanks for saving his life, Big has an opportunity to discover buried treasure! That is if the bat is telling the truth and helping him out doesn't land Big in hot water.
Trista Shaye weaves Christmas into an exciting adventure that has trickery and a fugitive, which creates an air of mystery in the story. The story has a fun plot that draws you into an adventure reminiscent of a pirate's hunt for buried treasure. The mystery stems from a bat named Herman who isn't necessarily entirely truthful and fills the role of a pirate-like character that aims to get his gold. He also has people searching for him which is where the fugitive elements come into play and give this little thriller aspect to the plot. The little touches throughout the story are delightful with Shaye capturing the personality quirks that make the characters so delightful and well-rounded. This book delves more into the inner workings of cat society and gets more of a look at their justice system when rules are broken. As with the first book, activities are included at the end of the story with a recipe for Christmas cookies, directions for snow coloring, and instructions for the game Snowman Snowball Fight. The Holiday Visitor is a must-have for all ages - a great holiday treat with fun activities and a delightful story that has Christmas, the search for treasure, and a mysterious bat.
