Pamela Kleibrink Thompson’s The Horse Who Wanted to Fly tells the inspirational story of a horse named Charlie who lives an ordinary life on an ordinary farm. But he believes that he can fly! However, all the naysayers keep telling him, “Horses don’t fly. So don’t even try.” Charlie is resilient and never stops believing in himself, even after being bought and sold to butchers, barbers, dirt haulers, and chicken dealers. His determination carries him from one owner to the next until he meets a man named Leland, who sees what others don’t. Together with photographer Eadweard, they set out to turn the naysayers into yeasayers. Readers are invited to find out exactly how.

This story was heartwarming and uplifting. It has the same cadence as a classic fable but with the spirit of modern inspiration. The pacing was well-balanced, making it easy for young readers to engage in exciting moments. Charlie’s character was determined and optimistic, which made him instantly endearing. Leland and Eadweard provided unwavering support for Charlie and championed him on. The illustrations by Melissa Bailey were soft, expressive, and a breathtaking addition that brought the story to life. The fun fact about Leland and Eadweard at the end of the story was a smart addition and a great educational tidbit for young readers. The poetic narrative style reminded me of The Girl Who Thought in Pictures by Julia Finley Mosca, which blended real-world figures with timeless lessons about perseverance. The Horse Who Wanted to Fly reminded me of the importance of believing in yourself even when no one else does.
