The Hunger of the Dragon by R.M. Schultz begins with Märren fleeing across dangerous lands, carrying her daughter Eimri’s skull, while voices in her mind guide her toward a Dragon’s scale to counter a curse. She loses the skull and is captured by Sea Serpent warriors, where a battle led by Caëtin, the last paladin of the Raven, is waged. Caëtin consolidates power in her temple, gaining divine authority. Meanwhile, a freed Märren journeys with Uisge through snow, mountains, and troll-infested passes toward the Dragon’s remains. Belfedrn, Thelira, Dradn, and the Ulfhednar fight Sea Serpent and Spider forces while training and securing survivors. Caëtin and her knights wade through clan politics, resisting Jarl Uktr’s harsh orders. Märren reaches a Dragon held by Surtr’s forces, negotiating for its cooperation to protect its young and assist her vengeance, amplifying her quest for the Dragon’s scale.
R.M. Schultz’s The Hunger of the Dragon is an action-packed odyssey that sweeps readers across frozen tundras, snow-laden mountains, and ancient temples full of magic and danger. Each chapter drives the story forward as Caëtin steps fully into her role as the last paladin of the Raven, facing betrayals, Spider and Sea Serpent attacks, and the responsibilities of her children while leading the Knights Black. Meanwhile, Märren’s pursuit of a Dragon’s scale also takes her through many, almost cinematically described, landscapes. The world-building is absolutely exceptional, and the writing is tight and effective—plus, there are berserkers and sweeping aerial battles! What I love most is that we have these incredibly capable female leads, and it's such a refreshing change from the usual Nordic Iron Age fantasy. The result is an unforgettable saga that captures the imagination and makes me so excited to see what Schultz gives us next. Very highly recommended.
