The Judgment of Paris (Miranda) by Ariel Setobarko is an exciting book for kids that gives them information about fascinating mythological characters. It is the story of Paris, son of King Priam of Troy and Queen Hecuba. The prince is brought up as a shepherd. At the same time, the three goddesses, Athena, Hera and Aphrodite, are contending for the golden apple on which it is written "to the fairest". The goddesses want Zeus to decide and he does not want to judge them. Zeus sends the golden apple to Paris and asks him to give it to the most beautiful goddess. The three goddesses come to bribe Paris and he gives the golden apple to Aphrodite because she promises to get him the most beautiful woman in the world, Helen. But unfortunately Helen is already the wife of Menelaus, the king of Sparta.
The book gives kids a fairly good knowledge of the characters of Greek mythology. The illustrations are bright and colorful and lend a personality to all the characters and help children to relate to the story. The author does a great job in telling them about this story from Greek mythology and through that introducing them to a few interesting mythological characters. The style is simple and it is a good bedtime story book. It is also a perfect book for read aloud sessions in school libraries and classrooms.
