The Keeper: A Poignant Story of Love and Redemption by Kay Chandler is described as a contemporary romance and rightly so; a tale of love and redemption with a powerful emotional conflict and characters that are real and appealing. Mandy Gafford doesn’t enjoy her life. She is bound to a homeless vagrant by bonds that are too strong to break. She is abused by a father who’s made her believe that he really needs her. She can’t find the strength to run away from him. A homeless friend has prayed for her and has always shared with her about the freedom of relying on God’s love. But can there be a way of escape for her? Can she find a way of reuniting with her lost love?
While the description of this novel makes it sound like a book with a straightforward plot, readers are really in for great surprises. Kay Chandler creates a powerful character in Mandy, a beautiful young woman caught up in a very difficult situation and the emotions grow stronger and stronger as the reader follows her emotional and psychological pain. It’s easy to hate her father, but some readers will find themselves pitying him. The writing flows flawlessly and features scenes that are focused, vividly written, and absorbing. The plot has many complex layers and a great sense of relationship building. It is interesting to navigate the different layers of the relationships featured in the story. The Keeper: A Poignant Story of Love and Redemption features themes of love, family, faith, abuse, and inner freedom. Deftly plotted and skillfully written, The Keeper is fast paced and very engaging, one of those books where readers will feel a strong connection with the characters.
