The Last Four Digits: A Lola Vega Mystery is a private investigator mystery novel written by Julie Leo. Lola's decision to give up practicing law in favor of being a private investigator was the fulfillment of a lifelong dream, but it hasn't been the easiest of transitions. She's been working out of her home, eschewing her favorite designer clothes and shoes in favor of more modestly priced items, and eating her meals at home to keep costs down. But it's been nearly a month since she last had a client and she's worried about the rent. When she gets a call from the second of Jack Stone's former wives asking for a consultation, Lola is more than ready to get sleuthing again. The movie star icon had been found dead from carbon monoxide poisoning in his Ferrari and there was a suicide note, but Jack's will is missing and there had been definite indications that he and his current wife, Leilani, had been considering a divorce. Linda Gross, Jack's second wife, thinks Jack was murdered and she wants Lola to investigate his death.
Julie Leo's private investigator mystery, The Last Four Digits: A Lola Vega Mystery, is a quirky and clever take on the crime noir genre. Lola's a private eye because she loves sleuthing, and she's willing to take chances to catch her villains, but the image of her trying to drive while applying nail polish and coping with a bee sting lends a definite note of humor to the story that follows. This klutzy and gutsy noir heroine is a joy to follow as she disregards warnings from sinister men in trench coats and travels up and down Southern California's Pacific Coast Highway in search of her prey. Leo's tale is well-plotted and includes plenty of puzzles for the mystery fan to unravel, but she also drops in a few tributes to classic detectives of the past which will equally delight discerning readers. Lola Vega and her two unlikely partners, the dishy Detective Michael Escobar and the psychic Molly O'Reilly, are well-crafted, authentic and believable characters. I'm looking forward to reading about Vega's further investigations. The Last Four Digits is highly recommended.
