It was late one night when two hedgehogs found a bowl filled with kibble, which Harry Hedgehog began to nibble on. However, Hazel Hedgehog is concerned about the coming winter and tells Harry that they should be foraging for proper food, such as bugs and berries, before it is too late. Harry doesn’t want to forage; he would rather eat dog food and relax. Mummy is concerned about the hedgehog eating dog food. She tries to remove the bowl from the ledge, but Harry grabs the bowl with his paw, which causes it to topple and crash onto the floor. Mummy eventually puts the bowl inside, but Harry creeps up to the dog flap and pushes it aside. He continues to eat the dog food. How will things unfold in The Lazy Hedgehog by Sara Louise Kelany when Mummy decides to get rid of Harry permanently?

The Lazy Hedgehog by Sara Louise Kelany is an amazing read. The writing style is crisp and engaging, which captured my attention from the start to the end. I loved the themes covered, which teach young readers about various animals and also new vocabulary. The message of the importance of strong friendships will also resonate with many readers. The author ensured the language used is age-appropriate, and the seamless flow of events leaves no room for confusion. Michelle Vermeulen did not disappoint with the illustrations either. They are colorful and interesting, which helps to capture the attention and imaginations of young readers. This was an excellent read, and I look forward to reading something else by this talented author.
