The Little Time Allotted Us is a work of science fiction, suspense, and interpersonal drama subgenres, and is the first half of the Andromeda Khanate Duology. The work is best suited to adult readers owing to scenes of strong violence. Penned by author Laura Paquette, the story follows Khair, a war criminal who surrendered after years of intergalactic conquest, allowing her memories to be wiped to save her life. However, Khair soon discovers that the war she cannot remember is far from over. Amidst the chaos of the scattered Andromedan Khanate and the pursuits of the United Oversight for Democracy (UOD), Khair becomes entangled in a personal war between General Taivan, a fleeing Khanate leader, and the relentless UOD forces. As Khair joins Taivan's quest, she grapples with the inner voice of Chip, a UOD parole officer with a hidden agenda. As a new conflict with the UOD emerges, Khair questions her loyalties and the methods of her allies, wondering if victory can be achieved without sacrificing their principles.

Author Laura Paquette has crafted an exciting and immersive blend of action-packed scenes and deep character development, inviting readers to ponder complex questions of loyalty, morality, and the nature of warfare. I was deeply involved in the close narrative techniques that let us into Khair’s head and the unique emotional turmoil she faces. Dynamic and heartfelt dialogue also picks out these crucial story beats in her development to move the plot along naturally, and I loved the pacing between intense, suspenseful scenes and introspective moments where we see Khair at her most vulnerable. What results is an emotive and impactful novel taking us on an exhilarating journey into a richly imagined intergalactic world, packed to the brim with political intrigue and moral dilemmas that linger long after the last page is turned. Overall, The Little Time Allotted Us is a compelling read that leaves readers eagerly anticipating the next installment in the duology, and I would not hesitate to recommend it to science fiction fans everywhere.
