The Luck of Elfbones is an epic fantasy by S.R. Button. Elfbones, a student at Kern Academy, was traveling on a school assignment when he inadvertently moved into the crosshairs of King James at the palace ball. He suddenly finds himself on the run with soldiers from the Royal Guard in pursuit. Unfortunately, he runs into one of the young cadets, Soli Ellard, who helps the king put him in the dreaded Schadbane prison. But Elfbones manages to escape from the prison. He soon reunites with Soli, bonding with her over their shared attempts to save the town from an upcoming comet and rescue a baby with enormous power. Joining forces with the mysterious Constance, Elfbones and Soli must now prevent the king's troops from awakening the sleeping giant and tearing the fabric of reality itself.
The Luck of Elfbones is as good as epic fantasy gets. Fantasy lovers will discover a host of magical creatures, including shapeshifters and shark-wolves, and find a lively, fantastical setting to immerse themselves in. Author S.R. Button has built a captivating world full of magic, mystery, and wonder that's easy to get lost in. The plot moves swiftly, taking the reader by surprise with well-placed twists and turns. I was thoroughly engrossed by the story. Each of the main characters -- Elfbones, Soli, and Constance -- has a unique personality with agency of their own. I particularly enjoyed the unexpected friendship between Elfbones and Soli. While difficult circumstances bring them together, they work well to save the world. The book ends on a tantalizing cliffhanger that leaves you wanting more. In conclusion, it's a must-read for epic fantasy fans.
