The Magical Red Kimono by Jan Morrill is a thoughtful children's picture book about the beautiful friendship of two young girls from two different cultures. Sachi and her best friend, Jubie, enjoy spending time together. While sitting under a big oak tree that grew outside the internment camp in Arkansas, known as Rohwer, they try to cope with the heat and the boredom of the day. Then, Sachi comes up with a fantastic idea and tells Jubie about a kimono, a traditional Japanese dress she wears when dancing at the Obon festival. As the festival is just a few days away, Sachi decides to teach Jubie a Japanese dance. The young girls have a lot of fun together. Jubie is thrilled to wear Sachi's beautiful red kimono. Most importantly, she's excited to learn from Sachi about the difference between obi, Bon-Odori, and Obon, a song about coal miners, and that there might be something magical about the kimono.
Written and illustrated by Jan Morrill, The Magical Red Kimono beautifully portrays a lovely friendship between two young girls who have fun together as they discover the joy of dancing, learn many things, embrace their differences, and find a little magic along the way. This delightful children's book contains actual photographs of the internment camp as background and is based on the author's historical novel, The Red Kimono. Even from the first page of the story, the unique illustrations capture the reader's attention and make them reflect on the young girls' situation. Young children will learn that they can have fun while learning about other cultures and that embracing our differences brings us closer.
