Lewis Pennington’s The Memory Stones begins in Civil War-era South Carolina, where Mase Winslow grows up at Willow Creek Plantation beside his closest friend, Jeziah “Spoon” Campbell. As war reaches the region, events at home leave Mase carrying memories that follow him into military service. His path eventually crosses with Juana, an elderly healer who understands far more about time than he does. Mase awakens in modern-day New York under the identity of writer Paul Talbert, with his earlier life buried beneath a world he recognizes as his own. His friend Zoey Antonelli helps him search for answers when unfamiliar images begin surfacing in his mind. Their search leads toward Beaufort, South Carolina, where an old plantation points Paul to a diary whose existence seems tied to a set of mysterious stones.

Lewis Pennington’s The Memory Stones is excellent historical time-travel fiction, and the author does a beautiful job of giving the nineteenth-century world a sense of history that feels close enough to step into. Mase has an openness that suits the story perfectly, particularly when the Civil War places him among soldiers whose lives have been shaped by the same era he once knew only from Willow Creek. The historical detail is fantastic. A battlefield bordered by a stone wall comes through in cannon fire tearing into the trees above the men, giving the fighting a physical reality that is easy to picture. The same strength appears during the journey south from Charleston, where rain turns the road to mud beneath the wagon carrying Spoon. Beautifully written and wonderfully atmospheric, readers who enjoy historical fiction with time travel will adore this.
