The Metamorphosis of Marna Love by Tom McEachin is a coming-of-age story about a sixteen-year-old high school sophomore. Raised by her single mother, Marna Love never quite felt like a typical teenager. She would rather read Kafka than worry about boys. She finds existential writers fascinating and has an innate curiosity about guardian angels. In school, however, she is constantly bullied by a senior who mistakenly presumes that Marna flirted with her boyfriend. When Marna starts having mysterious visions in her dreams, her mother, Barbara, insists she see a therapist. Barbara also shares a past secret that haunts Marna to this very day. Now, she is determined to find her guardian angel. When her search takes her to Ashton, Indiana, Marna discovers that her guardian angel is very different than what she expected him to be.
Author Tom McEachin takes readers on an enlightening journey of self-discovery, following a young teenager seeking to find balance between her passions, personal life, and school. The Metamorphosis of Marna Love is, at its core, a coming-of-age tale with a lot of heart and charm. The narrative plays out like a slice-of-life story. McEachin does a brilliant job of making even the small moments impactful for the reader. The heart-to-heart conversations between the characters were some of the best scenes in the book for me. I loved the relationship between Marna and Barbara. I also liked the way Marna gains a new perspective on life after meeting Davis. All in all, this is a beautiful story for both young adults and older readers. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and you will too!
