The Mountain by Anthony Pond is another short story featuring Ryan Jordan. Ryan is on a mountain climb. Last year, he failed to conquer it, but this time, he’s determined to beat it. Leading a small team, Ryan heads into the Sierra Nevada mountains. The weather is clear, his team is well-equipped, and they are all set to climb the 14000 feet to the peak. Last year, he made too many mistakes, but this year, he’s determined not to let it happen again. Will they manage the climb without incident?

The Mountain by Anthony Pond is somewhat bittersweet. It is a steady story with plenty of intrigue and the descriptive writing helps place you firmly in the setting. You will feel every part of the climb up to the peak, and you’ll feel the descent, too. Unlike a previous story that I read by this author, this one does not leave you with an ending that fires up your imagination. Although the story itself is imaginative and will definitely get your adventurous juices flowing, the ending is clear. I love short stories, and I certainly enjoyed this one. Once again, the writing is compelling, pulling you into the story and keeping you there with bated breath until the end. The author has created an interesting cast of characters in a tale that will stay with you long after you finish reading. It is about not letting yourself be conquered but being prepared to accept whatever consequences life throws your way. Another thoroughly enjoyable story.
