The Music Therapy Studio: Empowering the Soul's Truth is a work of non-fiction in the philosophy and alternative medicine subgenres. It is intended for the general reading audience and was penned by author Rick Soshensky to offer his expert conceptual help in utilizing music for therapeutic purposes. As a nationally acclaimed music therapist, Soshensky offers much in the way of technical and well-evidenced scientific information on the theory of this humanistic approach to healing. But more than this, he allows others to speak for themselves on the experience, presenting a variety of interesting and uplifting stories from marginalized and disabled people who have found that his theories truly work in wonderful ways.

As a reader who suffers from medical disabilities myself, I saw much of my own love of music in the spirited and accomplished writing of author Rick Soshensky, and the work was a fantastic springboard to learn so much more about the theory of why music can help us in such transformative and even spiritual ways. I was fascinated by the wealth of research, testimonials, and philosophy that the book contains, but also by the way that the author presents the work with wide-reaching access, favoring a casual and friendly narrative over the cold, clinical style of medical and academic texts. I think that my favorite overall section was the exploration of Framework and how it’s applied in various ways, particularly the expressive freedom of the chapter on Performing and Recording. Overall, readers seeking to truly understand the nature, structure, and thinking behind music therapy will find The Music Therapy Studio an eye-opening and essential read.
