The Offline Playbook for Teens by Ariana Smith is a non-fiction guide written for teenagers aged 13 to 16, their parents, and teachers. Rather than lecturing young readers about excessive screen use, Smith explains how digital platforms are designed to capture attention and shape behavior. The book explores the effects of smartphones and social media on concentration, sleep, motivation, and well-being. The emphasis is not on rejecting digital tools altogether but on regaining control over their use. And that makes all the difference, as our governments do not teach but forbid. France is about to ban social media for children under 15, as Australia has already done.

The Offline Playbook for Teens by Ariana Smith is a tool that I will use as a teacher, as I am currently preparing a lesson about this topic. The author writes for teenagers and does not underestimate their intelligence, and that’s something I really appreciated. That is exactly why I found the book particularly interesting: it actually addresses a question that many educators face every day: how can we help young people understand the impact of technology on their attention without resorting to moralising or simplistic criticism? Smith's answer is to provide information rather than prescriptions. As a mum and grandparent, I was also sensitive to the fact that the book recognizes the complexity of digital life and all the advice and clever “Try this box” baby steps that will help kids and teenagers slowly but really change their habits. I also love the 30-Day Challenge, and I must confess that I will give it a try as we are all too focused on our screens, kids and adults alike! Thank you for the useful references and the free discussion guide available on request for teachers. I highly recommend this book.
