The Orb Lady: Cali's Story by Beth M James is a gripping tale of survival, romance, and the search for freedom in the face of danger. Set against the backdrop of the American Midwest, the story follows Cali McGraw, a young woman about to turn eighteen and stuck in a job as a waitress. Cali's life takes a dangerous turn when a wealthy man targets her and decides to stop at nothing to make her his. This rich man hires traffickers who kidnap Cali, but she fights back and escapes, killing one of them in the process. She is now a wanted person — by law enforcement and traffickers — and must run. She must find the one person her mom never wanted her to meet — the Orb Lady. When she meets Fish, a musician with troubles, he becomes an excellent companion on the road. Cali slowly develops an attraction for him, but can she risk it?
Beth M James’ novel is a well-plotted narrative with a richly drawn female protagonist. The story combines suspense, romance, and action to keep readers turning the pages. Cali is a character that readers will adore. At a moment when her life seems stuck, events propel her toward a flight from the law and powerful enemies, a flight that has many surprises for her.
