Historical fiction. If done well, this genre is absolutely my favorite to read. If done poorly, it can be some of the worst drivel a reviewer has to slog through. Thankfully, I didn't have to slog through The Partisan's Wife, which is the third book in The Serpent's Tooth series by author Kathy Fischer-Brown. Follow the story of Anne Marlowe, married to Peter Marlowe, officer in the American Patriot Army, and formerly known as Lady Anne Darvey, now estranged from her father, the Marquess of Easterleigh. We find Anne in the unenviable position of being in the middle of her father and her husband, who are at diametric opposites regarding the fight for independence in the Americas. As Peter gets drawn further and further into the rebel cause and espionage becomes more and more a part of what he feels he must do, both he and Anne's lives are more and more at risk.
Author Kathy Fischer-Brown's book is simply a masterful example of what a piece of historical fiction should be. A suspenseful, romantic and exciting story set in the very realistic backdrop of the Americas in the Revolutionary War time period, this book was one that I simply could not put down once I started reading it. This was the first book in the series that I read, and, while I could easily follow the story line, I am looking forward to going back and reading The Serpent's Tooth series from the beginning, that is how much I enjoyed this tale. The Partisan's Wife is a book that would be enjoyed by anyone who loves great historical fiction, a suspenseful read, or just great fiction in general. I highly recommend this book, and am very much looking forward to reading more from author Kathy Fischer-Brown in the near future!
