The Path Beneath Her Feet by Janis Robinson Daly, the second book in the Path series, is set in the 1930s-40s. Fifty-seven-year-old Eliza Edwards cannot find a position appropriate for her experience as a medical doctor. Olga Povitsky, Eliza's friend and partner, will join a research laboratory in New York soon. Eliza and Olga shut down their medical practice in Boston. Eliza gets an opportunity to care for a pregnant woman struggling with poliomyelitis. Kay is African American, and the personnel in Georgia's Warm Springs are not welcoming of her. Eliza takes a new role and starts seeing her patients from a wider perspective. She follows Dr. Charlotte Fairbanks of the American Women's Hospitals to Jellico, Tennessee. Eliza assists Charlotte during surgical operations in the challenging conditions of the remote Appalachian settlement. While Charlotte packs her bags to move on to another challenge, Eliza is not ready to leave yet. Is Jellico a place where she finally reaches her true goals?
Janis Robinson Daly's The Path Beneath Her Feet is a compelling read for fans of historical fiction, drama, and character-driven novels. Eliza proudly represents her noble profession. She readily leaves her life in Boston for the dangers of the Appalachian wilderness. Eliza is intelligent, stubborn, and fearless. She perceives life with a touch of humor, and her dedication to her professional duty is remarkable. Olga is a vivid and a bit quirky secondary character. There is also Grace, a strong and motivated daughter of Appalachia. She proves that a humble upbringing cannot stop those with a clear vision of a brighter future. The narrative's pace is well-balanced and allows us to see the events described in the novel from a historical perspective. The author adds dramatic twists and turns to the plotline, keeping us engaged until the last page of this thought-provoking book.
