The Wandering Adventures at Hobart Mill by Dustin C. Kinard is an enthralling adventure for children, following an eleven-year-old boy, Malachi Halladay, who wishes to be like his parents, brave world travelers. Malachi just lost his parents in a plane crash and must move from New York to Tasmania to live in a tiny house with his great-grandmother. One day, while exploring the forest near the house, he befriends a young Tasmanian devil. Shortly after, when Tasmania begins to feel more and more like home, Malachi stumbles upon an abandoned, large, old, mysterious mill. More curious than ever, when he ventures closer, he discovers that some magical, musical creatures live at Hobart Mill. Without even realizing it, he and the creatures are magically transported to a foreign land where their lifelong adventure together is just beginning.

The Wandering Adventures at Hobart Mill is a gorgeously written tale, filled with action, adventure, life lessons, wonderful illustrations, and inspiring characters. Dustin C. Kinard's debut middle-grade adventure is more about the journey than the destination, and the legends, folklore, and mythology that come to life. This compelling story invites young readers to be curious, brave, and adventurous and explore new things, places, and cultures. It reminds them that not everyone is bad, and sometimes they should give someone a chance. You can join Malachi, his trusty Tasmanian devil sidekick, and the Bogos on an extraordinary adventure where you'll meet a giant, a serpent with five heads, a sharkman, a prehistoric turtle, and more. This story is for anyone with an adventurous spirit.

Dustin C. Kinard's The Wandering Adventures at Hobart Mill is a warm, emotionally grounded story about eleven-year-old Malachi Halladay, who is forced to leave New York after losing his parents. He's sent to live with his great-grandmother, Granny Annie, on a quiet beach in Tasmania. As he settles into this strange new place, Malachi begins to connect with his new surroundings. He makes friends with Fern, a clever Tasmanian devil, and starts to rebuild his life. The story unfolds gently, balancing moments of grief and healing with playful, sometimes surreal adventures—including a mysterious estate, a musical grain shed, and a family journal filled with secrets. As the story winds through both magical and emotional territory, Malachi starts to understand himself better. Malachi begins to find peace and purpose in his new home, supported by an eclectic cast and a growing sense of identity.

The Wandering Adventures at Hobart Mill by Dustin C. Kinard creates a believable yet fantastical world that blends grounded emotion with wonder-filled discovery. The Tasmanian setting is deeply immersive—from tropical birds and dense jungles to folklore-laced ruins—and Kinard wisely keeps the natural magic tied to real emotional stakes. The transition from grounded grief to mystical adventure is seamless and well-balanced, never losing the heart of Malachi's journey. The illustrations are simple and captivating, giving younger readers a visual connection to the narrative. One of the strongest elements is the world-building: the eerie Hobart Mill estate, the mysterious music in the woods, and the surreal pocket dimension that introduces mythical characters are all deeply atmospheric. The incorporation of folklore and spiritual symbolism feels fresh, allowing young readers to connect with abstract themes like loss, identity, and memory through concrete experiences. Malachi is a believable protagonist with a clear emotional arc, and Granny Annie—brave, eccentric, and wise—steals every scene she's in. Fern, the Tasmanian devil, is more than a cute sidekick; her presence symbolizes trust, instinct, and emotional connection. The story celebrates imagination without undermining reality: Malachi's grief isn't erased by fantasy—it's processed through it. The magical world he explores seems to symbolize the chaos and unpredictability of loss, while his journey back reflects his increasing acceptance and healing. Kinard's writing style is both expressive and suitable for young readers, resonating with emotional depth. He masterfully captures the wonder of discovery alongside the subtle pain of missing home. This book is perfect for young readers who enjoy tales featuring animal companions, heartfelt family narratives, and a touch of magical realism intertwined with real-world loss.
