Everyone lives somewhere, and in The Places We Call Home, Kim Ann shares how varied and special homes are. This picture book helps children understand that a home does not depend on where one lives but on where one loves and where one’s heart resides. This place called home may be in a big city or a small town. Homes are also where animals live, such as cozy dens, the ocean, dark caves, and tall trees. Some live in a home with their family or many others, while others live alone. Kim wants children to understand that wherever they call home is home to them. It may differ from their friend’s home, but it is theirs. When one understands where their home is, they can enjoy life to its fullest. The old saying goes, “There is no place like home.”

People in today’s society move more often than they used to. During a child’s formative years, they may move three times or more. Moving can be very traumatic for children, and they may lose a sense of what and where home is. Kim Ann comes to the rescue with a sweet little book for young readers. In The Places We Call Home, Ann helps children learn that home is more of an attitude than a place. She explains that all sorts of places can be called home and that humans and animals live in all kinds of homes. Nejla ShoJaie excellently illustrates this book. It will delight children as they enjoy the bright colors and the different places called home. Be sure to talk with your children about what makes a home a home and discuss any fears your child may have about moving. Home is where their heart lives.
