The Rabbi’s Knight by Michael J. Cooper is an epic historical tale set at the twilight of the Crusades, full of twists, turns, betrayals, romance, and heroism. It accurately captures the mystique, majesty, and drawing power associated with the city of Jerusalem. Knight Templar Jonathan St. Clair was garrisoned in Acre, where he had come into possession of a manuscript whose significance he didn’t understand. After consulting Rabbi Samuel, he discovers the manuscript’s inscription is a key to unlocking the secrets of Jerusalem’s Temple Mount. Together, the pair set out for Jerusalem, but Rabbi Samuel had been targeted for assassination not only by a rival rabbi, Solomon Petit, but also by an evil emir in the service of Rabbi Petit. Time is of the essence for this pair, but they will find assistance and succour from some unexpected sources on their journey, as well as Jonathan finding love and happiness.
The Rabbi’s Knight is a fast-paced, exciting journey through an area of the world that was riven with violence, bloodshed, and treachery in the thirteenth-century Middle East. Author Michael J. Cooper has done a superlative job of creating an adventure that melds imaginary characters with well-known historical figures of the period. I was particularly surprised to discover a young William Wallace popping up in the Middle East at that time, long before his heroic deeds in leading the Scottish Independence uprising against King Edward I. It was a time of great upheaval in both the Christian and Muslim worlds, but this story is more about relationships, purpose, and love. There is no shortage of action in their journey to Jerusalem, but it is the loyalty, friendship, and bonds between very different characters that lingered long in my mind after reading. It is certainly a stark reminder that Jerusalem, and the Holy Land in general, has great meaning and impact on any number of religions, races, and creeds. It has been fought over for centuries and even today is the subject of bitter rivalry and mistrust. What this story reminds us is that we are first and foremost human beings, capable of love and respect, regardless of our background or history. I loved this story and highly recommend it.
